The Dance Shack/Dances/Salsa

Salsa Description

Salsa is a fun, energetic dance that's great to meet other people with because it's gotten so popular! In Jacksonville and everywhere!  If you’re looking to go out dancing any night of the week, learn Salsa! It’s a staple at Dance Clubs, Latin Clubs and Restaurants.

Salsa is  a sexy dance with a lot of body movement. Learning it is a great way to get a good workout, develop better balance and flexibility, and to show off!

Salsa History

Although the name Salsa originated in New York in the 1930's, the dance itself came from Cuba which served as a mixing bowl for dances coming from various parts of the Caribbean and Latin America. Salsa can claim roots in African drumming and dance, French and English country dancing, Spanish flamenco, and the spirit and individual style of the Cuban, Haitian, Dominican and other peoples dancing it.

Salsa Style

Considered an advanced dance, Salsa’s basic step is deceptively simple with 6 steps danced across 8 beats of music. It is danced with the weight forward on the foot and dancers are sometimes told to pretend they are dancing on sand, digging their toes in with each step. Turns, (and there can be a lot of them), are powered by rotating through the shoulders with the hips and feet following through.

Salsa is a flashy, show-off kind of dance with partners performing moves called shines or striking quick accent poses to emphasize strength, footwork, or sexuality. As with all Latin dances, there is a great deal of body movement.
